Hanover Fire Department Responds to Structure Fire 12/22/22

December 21, 2022

On December 21, 2022, at approximately 11:15 am, the Hanover Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 172 Cross Street. A full first alarm assignment was dispatched consisting of Engine 7, Engine 4, Engine 3, Tower 1, Ambulance 1, C1, and C2. The Regional Old Colony Communications Center received a 911 call reporting fire and smoke inside a home. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from the exterior of a two-and-one-half-story balloon frame constructed residential structure. All occupants had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department and reported a fire in the basement. A Working Fire Assignment was requested bringing mutual aid assistance to the scene. First arriving crews made entry into the home with hose lines and were able to locate a fire in the basement and quickly extinguished it.

Additional crews were able to perform simultaneous tasks including forcible entry, performing searches, deploying additional hose lines, securing a water supply, ventilating, placing ground ladders, checking for fire extension, overhauling the fire area, and providing a Rapid Intervention Team.  No fire extension was found within the remainder of the home.

Mutual aid engines from Hanson and Rockland assisted at the scene. A Pembroke ladder truck also responded. An engine from Norwell provided station coverage during the incident and responded to a fire alarm activation at a commercial occupancy on Washington Street during this incident. Support from the Hanover Police Department, Hanover Department of Municipal Inspections, and Hanover Department of Public Works was necessary.

Two additional firefighters, who happened to be at headquarters for a department meeting, responded on the first arriving apparatus. Having these other firefighters upon arrival aided the ability to perform multiple simultaneous tasks early in the incident.

There were no injuries reported at the incident.

The estimated damage is approximately $50,000.

The fire remains under investigation by the Hanover Fire and Police Joint Fire Investigation Unit.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 1:01 pm.
