Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement

Fire PreventionThe Hanover Fire Department Fire Prevention Division is responsible for all inspections and enforcement of the fire code. A full-time Fire Prevention Officer coordinates all activities in the Division. Office Hours for the Fire Prevention Officer are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. For questions or inquiries during other times, please contact the Duty Officer, at 781-826-3151.

Inspections

Flammable and Combustible Storage including Propane Storage and Installation

To store flammable and combustible liquids in the town of Hanover you must first complete an FP 06 Form. The completed form can be turned in to the Hanover Fire Department.

Oil Burner Installation and Oil Tank Removal/Replacement

For services regarding oil tank removal, oil tank replacement, and oil burner installation you must first complete and submit a Form 1 document. This document must be completed by a certified installer. The completed form can be turned in to the Hanover Fire Department.  Once received the property owner will be contacted by a member of the Hanover Fire Department to schedule an inspection.

Private Fire Hydrant Inspections

The Town of Hanover General Bylaws (6-33) requires regular maintenance and inspection of fire hydrants located on private property to ensure compatibility with the public water infrastructure supporting fire protection and related needs.  For additional information, please contact Captain Justin Reed, [email protected], or call 781-826-3151, ext. 3132.

Residential Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Inspections

Are you selling your home? You will need a Certificate of Compliance from the local fire department that shows your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms meet the requirements for a sale or transfer.

Third-Party Plan Review

For certain projects, an independent review of fire protection and life safety plans may be required.

Per the Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code (527 CMR 1.15, Technical Assistance), the Hanover Fire Department may require a project to undergo an independent, third-party review. This is typically necessary for projects whose technical scope and complexity exceed the department's internal review capabilities, ensuring all plans meet the highest standards of safety.

Consulting firms not listed may be considered for approval. Any firm that wishes to be added must contact the Fire Prevention Office and demonstrate the required level of expertise and qualifications.
