Employment Information

Career Firefighter/Paramedic

The Hanover Fire Department utilizes the Massachusetts Civil Service System to hire and promote Career Firefighters who must have the minimum qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and have at least a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Must reside in a community as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Must be a Massachusetts or Nationally Registered Paramedic.

Call Firefighter

To be considered, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Resident of Hanover or an adjacent community.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license (must be maintained).
  • Completion of the required initial training and ongoing participation in department training.
  • Response to a minimum percentage of emergency calls per year (as defined by policy).
  • EMT certification is not required, but may be preferred.
  • Firefighting experience is not required, but may be considered a plus.

If selected, you will be required to attend the Massachusetts Call/Volunteer Firefighter Training Program, typically held two weekday evenings and one weekend day per week over approximately five months. Upon completion, you will be assigned to one of two call companies based on the location of your residence.
