Hanover Fire Department Press Release 5/17/20

Transfer Station Fire

At approximately 7:30pm on May 17, 2020, the Hanover Fire Department and Emergency Communication Center both received verbal reports of a fire at the Hanover Transfer Station located at 118 Rockland Street. Box 42 was struck and a 1st Alarm Assignment was dispatched. Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the trash pit at the Transfer Station.

Firefighters utilized several hose lines to bring the flames and fire spread under control. The fire spread deep into the pit which was full of residential trash and other debris. Extensive overhaul was necessary to ensure the fire had been extinguished. Hanover’s Tower 1 proved useful as it allowed water to penetrate deep into the materials from above. Trash was emptied from the pit by crews from the Department of Public Works and firefighters ensured it was fully extinguished.

Damage to the facility is estimated to be approximately $10,000.

Firefighters cleared at 9:33pm.
