Hanover Fire Department Press Release 5/14/20

Ames Way Brush Fire

At approximately 4:30pm on May 14, 2020, the Hanover Fire Department received a 911 call reporting heavy smoke from a possible structure fire in the area of Winter Street and Ames Way. Box 42 was struck and a 1st Alarm Assignment was dispatched. Firefighters arrived and found the smoke to be coming from the Department of Public Works Facility on Ames Way. Further investigation found that the brush and yard waste pile had caught fire. The fire had taken over a large portion of the approximately 200 x 75 pile and was threatening the Salt Storage Shed.

Firefighters utilized large master streams to bring the flames and fire spread under control. The fire traveled deep into the pile which contained leaves, wood and other yard debris. Extensive overhaul was necessary to ensure the fire had been extinguished. Hanover’s Tower 1 proved useful as it allowed water to penetrate deep into the pile from above. Crews from the Department of Public Works assisted with machines to further break up the pile.

The Norwell Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.

Firefighters cleared at 6:39pm.
