Hanover or Hannover? 4/1/26

Hannover, Mass

While researching local records for our upcoming 300th anniversary in 2027, a stunning historical discovery has come to light: the Town’s original legal name was actually the German-spelled 'Hannover.' It appears that over centuries of 'Americanization,' the second 'n' was quietly abandoned.

Selectman Greg Satterwhite, who originally unearthed these long-forgotten records when working through the archives with Town Manager Joe Colangelo, commented, “I was excited to make this discovery. It’s a fascinating piece of history.” In response to this significant update to the historical record, Town Moderator Doug Thomson has ruled that the matter must be brought before the Annual Town Meeting to formalize the legal return to Hannover. “I have lived here my entire life, and this is absolutely wild! It will be an honor to preside over the meeting that will correct our Town’s name!” proclaimed Doug. Meanwhile, Budget Director James Hoyes is assessing the fiscal impact of updating all municipal signage and branding. “The scale of this correction is staggering,” Hoyes noted. “We are anticipating capital needs well into the seven figures to make all the upgrades. It changes our entire financial outlook, but given the weight of this historical truth, it is a necessary investment.”

Annual Town Meeting voters will be able to formally (re)establish Hannover’s correct name by voice vote in Han(n)over High School’s Auditorium at Annual Town Meeting on Monday, May 4, 2026 (meeting starts at 7:30 pm). This discovery reminds us that Hannover still has mysteries and stories to tell. As we prepare for our 300th Anniversary next summer, we can’t wait to celebrate Hannover’s past, present, and future!
