Town Clerk’s Office Operational Plan

As we continue to manage our response to the pandemic and COVID-19 cases in the Commonwealth, as well as respond to a 50% reduction in staff, to limit your exposure to COVID-19 and keep our employees healthy and able to serve you in this time of national emergency, the Hanover Town Clerk's Office will open by appointment only.  Further, 95% of the transactions with the Town Clerk's Office are able to be handled electronically and/or via drop-off in the front door mail slot or US Mail.

  • Most transactions are to be handled electronically or via drop off in the front door mail slot or US Mail.  Open by appointment only during regular Town Hall business hours.  Subject to change depending on staffing; updates will be made here.  Call x1079 for an appointment.

Most requests will be fulfilled by mail, including requests for vital records, receipts for nomination papers, requests for absentee ballots, etc. Please leave your request in the front door mail slot or mail it to Town Clerk's Office, 550 Hanover Street, Hanover, MA  02339.  Only the following services are required by law to be fulfilled in person:  Marriage intentions and oaths of office; an appointment, social distancing, and a mask is necessary.

About the Town Clerk's Office

The Town Clerk's Office ensures accurate compliance with constantly changing State Laws relative to the Town Clerk and Registrars of Voters and provides exemplary service to the general public.  The Town Clerk is the chief election official, which includes running the elections (town, state, and federal) and related early voting periods, registering people to vote, providing absentee ballots, and receiving campaign finance reports from local office candidates.  The Town Clerk’s Office is also the keeper of vital records (i.e. births, deaths and marriages), Town Meeting votes, Town By-Laws, and zoning decisions.  The Office also licenses dogs, issues raffle permits, registers flammable tanks, and issues business (DBA) certificates, and works with the Registrars of Voters to administer the Town Census.

The Town Clerk's Office only accepts cash or check. You may, however, use a credit or debit card in the Town Collector's Office and use your receipt as proof of payment. Payments made by debit or credit card are charged a fee based on the transaction amount (Credit/Debit Card Fee Schedule).
