Land Records Scam

Plymouth County Registry of Deeds

Don't fall prey to a scam offering to provide a copy of your property deed for an exhorbitant fee.  The Plymouth County Registry of Deeds provides this information at low or no cost.  Most information can be searched and viewed online for free and via Public Access stations at three locations:  Rockland, Brockton, and Plymouth.  Certain  documents are available only in Plymouth.

If you need a printed deed start with the Registry Guide.  Official printouts cost $3 per deed.  Online printing requires an account, which costs $30 per month plus $1 per page.

On September 6, 2013 the Wellesley Town Clerk reported:

Resident called today asking how to get copy of her deed, we said to go to county registry of deeds.

She had gotten a mailing from Record Transfer Services with all her information and very official looking. The mailing offered to get her a copy of her property deed for $83, just send her credit card info.

After speaking to us, the resident called the registry of deed  in Dedham and they told her it was a total scam. This company sends out the mailing based on recent recordings and then pockets the money they get. A copy of a deed is only $2 from registry in Dedham [Norfolk County], and you can get printouts on line by paying the modest fee to registry.

The registry says they gets hundred of inquirys based on this mailing. Be on the lookout for your residents safety.
