Hanover Animal Care and Control Enhances Emergency Response with Animal Oxygen Kits 8/16/23

Hanover ACCO and HFDIn a significant step towards improving the safety and well-being of animals in emergency situations, Lee-Ann Meehl, Hanover Animal Care and Control Officer (ACCO) purchased animal oxygen kits for all Hanover Fire Department ambulances. This initiative, aligned with the provisions of Nero's Law, marks a concerted effort to ensure the highest quality of care during emergency situations involving animals.

Nero's Law has been a catalyst for change by advocating for improved emergency response protocols for police K-9s. This law allows EMTs to provide treatment and transportation of police K-9s. The scope of what treatment may be given is limited to basic life support and includes bleeding control, oxygen administration, and CPR. The department received a bleeding control kit for placement in each ambulance as part of the required training for Hanover’s firefighters/EMTs and paramedics. While animal oxygen masks were available on department fire trucks for fire-related incidents, this equipment was not available on department ambulances. Thanks to the vision and dedication of ACCO Meehl, our ambulances will all be equipped with these life-saving oxygen delivery items to be used on all animals.

ACCO Meehl emphasized the positive impact of this endeavor on animal welfare. “The inclusion of these oxygen kits reflects our understanding of the deep bonds that exist between people and their pets. This initiative aligns perfectly with the spirit of Nero's Law and is a testament to Hanover's commitment to the well-being of our entire community."

Hanover Fire Chief Jason Cavallaro expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, stating, "Our organization continually adapts to meet the changing needs of our community and requirements that are placed upon us. The addition of these oxygen kits will allow us to meet the new standards of Nero’s Law.”
This collaborative effort between Hanover's Animal Care and Control Officer and the Hanover Fire Department reinforces the importance of preparedness for every aspect of emergency response in our community.

Special thanks to MVMA Charities for their support and contributions to animal welfare.
