Street Lists, Acceptances, and Census

The Town of Hanover mails a street listing questionnaire (census) annually at the end of December. It is important that you promptly review your form, make changes as needed, and sign and return it to the Town Clerk/Registrar’s Office (even if all the information is correct). As of 2019, a confirmation of your census information may instead be returned on-line if there are no changes.  If there are changes, your signed paper form may be returned by mail or dropped off at Town Hall. An after-hours drop box for mail is available at the front door.

According to state law, failure to respond to the mailing shall result in removal from the active voting list and may result in removal from the voter registration rolls, so it is important to return your census. Each form is bar-coded so that it can be scanned into the statewide network. If you are new to the Town of Hanover or have misplaced your questionnaire, you may download a blank Census Form.

It is essential that the Town knows who is currently living in each household so that the police and fire departments can respond appropriately in an emergency. In addition, the census is important in order to have the correct tally of persons for voting purposes, and so that the Town receives adequate state funding (based on the population). The federal census is also taken to redistrict the Town based on population every ten years.

The Annual Street List of Residents is published in late spring and is available in the Town Clerk’s office for a fee of $10.00.
