Hanover High School Retrofitted with Energy-Saving LED Lighting 4/22/21

On April 22, 2021, the Town of Hanover Department of Public Works Facilities Division completed a $47,019 Green Communities project at Hanover High School to retrofit 100 pre-existing high bay pendant-style luminaires, located in the cafeteria and library, to high-efficiency LED fixtures.  Each luminaire had originally been fitted with 2 CFL lamps that were secured in pin-style sockets.  The retrofit involved the replacement of the CFL base unit in each luminaire with a threaded single-socket base and an LED lamp.  The LED lamp, manufactured by Remphos, is a special state-of-the-art device that uses 3D technology to widely distribute light down to the floor as well as laterally and vertically in all directions through a glass reflector.

The project was completely funded through a Green Communities grant of $37,419 from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources combined with a $9,600 incentive grant from National Grid through the MassSave program.  Hanover achieved Green Community designation in 2010 and the community has received over 1.7 million dollars in grant funding since that time to complete more than 50 energy efficiency projects in our schools and municipal buildings.

The new lights in the High School reduce the wattage in each luminaire from 100 watts to 37 watts, resulting in a total electricity savings of approximately 15,000 kWh per year or approximately $6,000 in annual electricity savings, resulting in a reduction of approximately 10.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by the utility.

Additional benefits of the project include improved lighting in both areas of the school as well as significant savings in Facilities Division maintenance labor due to the longer life of the LED lamps, projected to exceed 10 years.  The project was contracted with and designed by Energy Source of Smithfield, Rhode Island, and the retrofit of the fixtures was completed by electrical contractor, Gone Green Electric, LLC, of Rockland, Massachusetts.
