Fireworks Site Cleanup Update

Residents who live nearby may notice new sounds coming from the site. Beginning this week, a digital geophysical mapping survey of Factory Pond will be conducted. A hovercraft will be used during daylight hours to move surveying equipment over the surface of the pond. The hovercraft is propelled by a small aircraft type engine and creates a distinctive droning or buzzing noise. The survey is expected to take 2 to 3 weeks to complete.

Neighbors may have noticed that the Fireworks site has been quiet the past few weeks. There have been no detonations as work has focused on creating better access for equipment. The excavation of soil and detonations to dispose of live munitions will resume on January 7th 2019. Munitions that are safe to move will be collected and detonated on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Munitions that are unsafe to move are detonated in place as they are discovered.

There have been some issues with the solar powered siren used to provide neighbors with advanced notice of detonations. We hope to have the siren fixed soon. In the meantime, a fire truck siren is sounded to provide advanced notification. The siren is sounded twice, five minutes before detonation and sounded again once, one minute before detonation.

If you have questions about the ongoing clean-up please call Hanover Emergency Management at 781- 826-5000, ext. 3500.

Sincerely,

Fire Chief / Emergency Management Director
