Hanover Fire Department Press Release 2/29/20

Hanover Transfer Station

At approximately 12:11pm on February 29, 2020, the Hanover Fire Department received a 911 call reporting smoke coming from the trash pit at the Hanover Transfer Station, located at 118 Rockland Street. Box 42 was struck and a 1st Alarm Assignment was dispatched. First arriving firefighters found smoke coming from the trash pit.  A quick investigation confirmed an active fire in the hauling trailer connected to the pit.

Firefighters worked in coordination with Department of Public Works crews to disconnect and remove the trailer from the pit area and re-locate it to a more remote area away from any exposures.  Firefighters utilized a deck gun to penetrate into the materials without exposing members to smoke. Crews utilized a machine to remove trash from the trailer.  Extensive overhaul was necessary to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

The Transfer Station was closed to the public while crews mitigated the situation and cleaned the area.

The Pembroke Fire Department provides station coverage during the incident.

Firefighters cleared at 2:02pm.
