Is there always someone at the firehouse?

No. Most fire stations in the United States are only occupied until an emergency call comes in*. Hanover is no exception. Fire Headquarters on Center Street is the only manned station in Town. The Station in West Hanover is a call station, the firefighters respond to the station only when called to respond. Stations 1 and 2 are currently unmanned, and used only to store equipment.

All full time personnel assigned to Fire Headquarters are assigned to various pieces of fire equipment/ambulances. Once an emergency call is received, the appropriate equipment is dispatched, many times leaving no one at the fire station until they terminate that call.

* For this reason, if you have an emergency, it is always better to dial 911, rather than to drive to a fire station, which may be empty.
