Christmas Storm 2020

In anticipation of the impending storm, be informed and know what to do in an emergency. In addition to the High Wind Warning/Advisories in effect for southern New England, a combination of heavy rain and rapid snow melt will set the stage for fairly widespread flooding issues across parts of Massachusetts. Stay in the know, visit NWS Boston for the latest weather updates and alerts.

In preparation of high winds this evening, keep flashlights and extra batteries at home and make sure your mobile devices are fully charged so you can stay connected in the event of an outage. For additional tips, visit https://www.hanover-ma.gov/emergencyprep

CodeRED Alerts

The CodeRED system is used to send emergency notifications within the Town of Hanover. Residents and businesses are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED to be sure they receive timely emergency notifications and other important information and instructions when alerts are issued. Sign up for CodeRED Alerts and Notifications.

Shelter In Place During the Storm

Residents are advised to shelter in place.  At this time there are no plans to open an emergency shelter.  Hanover Emergency Management will monitor the needs of the community after the storm and is prepared to open a shelter, warming station, and/or charging station if necessary. Should you lose power be prepared to be without it for up to 72 hours.

  • Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for hurricane progress reports.
  • Stay inside, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.
  • Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.

Power Outages

Downed Power Lines

Residents are advised to use extreme care around downed utility wires. Assume they are “live.”

  • Report downed utility lines by calling 911.
  • All downed wires should be considered live. This includes electric, telephone, and cable wires.
  • Emergency responders will be marking downed wires with YELLOW caution tape.  Remind children to stay away from all downed wires.
  • Again, all downed wires should be considered live and avoided.

Damaged House Service Tip

If your house service is damaged follow these three steps:

  1. Have a licensed electrician repair the damage.
  2. The electrician must pull a permit.
  3. Have the repair inspected.

Lighting

Battery-powered lanterns and flashlights are the safest emergency lighting source. Use extreme caution when using candles.

Generators

  • Use Caution when operating generators.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Do not run generators near structures or in enclosed areas due to the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Chain Saws

  • Residents who own chainsaws should follow the manufacturer's recommended operating guidelines.
  • Do not attempt to cut down trees that are “hung up” on houses or on other trees.  How they fall is very unpredictable and may result in death, injury or further damage.
  • Leave difficult chainsaw work to properly trained tree removal professionals
